2026 Update — Lipulekh Pass Reopened
The Lipulekh Pass has officially reopened for both trade and tourism in 2026. This is the most "spiritually raw" route, passing through the Kumaon Himalayas. It is best suited for experienced high-altitude trekkers with at least 3 months of physical preparation.

Eligibility & Medical Requirements
The Gatekeeper of Your Journey
The medical and eligibility requirements for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra are strict — and for good reason. The Parikrama reaches 5,630 metres where oxygen is 40–50% of sea level. Here is what you must meet.
-
🎂
Age Limit
18 to 70 years as of January 1, 2026. Children below 18 are not permitted. For pilgrims above 65, the helicopter route is strongly recommended with specialist medical clearance.
Mandatory
-
⚖️
BMI Requirement
BMI must be 27 or less. Those with higher BMI face significantly elevated AMS risk at high altitude and may be rejected at the government medical screening stage.
Mandatory — MEA Route
-
🏥
Mandatory Medical Screening
MEA route pilgrims undergo two-stage medical screening at Delhi Heart and Lung Institute and ITBP Hospital. Private route pilgrims must submit a fitness certificate from a registered MBBS doctor (on letterhead with ECG for pilgrims above 50).
Mandatory
-
🚫
Common Disqualifiers
Chronic asthma, uncontrolled diabetes, hypertension above 160/100 despite medication, or active heart disease. Well-controlled conditions with doctor clearance may be eligible — consult your specialist and share the report with our team before booking.
Important

🏃
Fitness Preparation
Start a daily regimen of brisk walking (5–8 km) and Pranayama (breathing exercises) at least 3 months before departure. Stair climbing of 10–15 floors daily is excellent preparation for the Dolma La ascent at 5,630 metres.

State-Wise Subsidies
Is Your State Paying for Your Yatra?
Many Indian state governments provide a one-time financial grant to their permanent residents upon successful completion of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. This is a reimbursement model — you complete the Yatra first, then apply for the subsidy.
| State | Subsidy Amount | Key Requirement |
| Uttar Pradesh | ₹1,00,000 | Permanent resident; apply within 90 days |
| Rajasthan | ₹1,00,000 | Devasthan Dept. grant; limited slots / lottery |
| Haryana | ₹50,000 | Domicile proof; MEA route completion required |
| Uttarakhand | ₹50,000 | Must travel via Pithoragarh / Lipulekh route |
| Tamil Nadu | ₹50,000 | ₹40k for Kailash + ₹10k if including Muktinath |
| Chhattisgarh | ₹50,000 | Native residents; handled by Tourism Dept. |
| Karnataka | ₹35,000 | Application via Hindu Religious Endowments |
| Delhi | ₹30,000 | Under Mukhyamantri Tirth Yatra Yojana |
| Madhya Pradesh | ₹30,000 | 50% of cost (max ₹30k) for non-income taxpayers |
| Gujarat | ₹23,000 | Apply online via Yatradham Board |
⚠️
Critical Advice for Subsidy Claimants
To ensure your subsidy is not rejected, collect and preserve the following during and after your Yatra:
1
Yatra Completion Certificate — issued by the MEA or your tour operator. Trip To Temples provides this to every pilgrim.
2
Original Boarding Passes — for all flights, especially if travelling via Nepal.
3
Visa & Permit Copies — stapled group visa copies and Tibet Travel Permit documents.
4
Proof of Domicile — Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, or Domicile Certificate showing your state address.
5
Bank Details — a cancelled cheque from the account where you want the grant credited.

Spiritual Checklist
More Than a Trek — A Spiritual Journey
To make your journey more than just a physical achievement, keep these sacred moments and intentions in mind as you travel.
🌊
Lake Mansarovar
Aim to be awake during Brahma Muhurta — 3 AM to 5 AM — to witness the divine stillness over the lake. The pre-dawn silence at Mansarovar at 4,590 metres is unlike any other experience on Earth.
🏔️
The South Face
On the first day of the Parikrama, look for the natural Swastika formation or the "Gash of Milarepa's Drum" on the mountain's south face — visible from Darchen in the right light conditions.
🌑
The Two Lakes
Reflect on the contrast between the calm, turquoise Mansarovar and the turbulent, dark Rakshastal as you pass between them — the divine feminine and the demonic, held in eternal balance.

Horse Year Packing List — 2026 Pro Edition
What to Pack for Kailash Yatra
The extreme altitude — up to 19,500 feet — and the Year of the Horse crowds mean your gear must be reliable and efficient. Layering is not an option; it is a survival requirement.
🧊
Base Layer — 3 pairs of high-quality thermals
Wool-blend thermals are ideal — they wick moisture and stay warm even when damp, unlike synthetic materials that lose insulating value when wet. Pack 3 full sets (top + bottom). Merino wool is the gold standard. Avoid cotton entirely at altitude.
🧥
Mid Layer — Heavy fleece jacket or lightweight down sweater
This layer provides the bulk of your warmth. A 700-fill down jacket or a heavy Polartec fleece works best. You will be wearing this almost constantly above 4,000 metres. Pack 2 mid-layers — one lighter (for active trekking) and one heavier (for camps and evenings).
🌬️
Outer Shell — High-performance windproof and waterproof jacket
Your outer shell must be both windproof and waterproof. Wind at Dolma La Pass (5,630m) is ferocious even in peak summer. Gore-Tex or similar breathable waterproof membrane is recommended. This jacket will be your most important piece of gear on Day 2 of the Parikrama.
👟
Footwear & Essential Gear
Waterproof trekking boots with high ankle support — purchased now and broken in with at least 50 km of walking before your departure date. Power bank (20,000 mAh+) for the 5–7 days without electricity inside Tibet. SPF 50+ sunscreen — UV radiation is intense at altitude. UV-400 wraparound sunglasses to prevent snow blindness — mandatory, not optional.

Health, Fitness & Altitude Safety
Staying Safe at 5,630 Metres
Altitude sickness (AMS) is the most significant health risk on the Kailash Yatra. Follow these four rules — they could save your life.
🏔️
Acclimatisation
Spend at least 2 nights at intermediate altitudes before attempting the Parikrama. Our itineraries build dedicated acclimatisation days at Purang (3,700m) and Darchen (4,575m) specifically for this. Never ascend if you have symptoms.
💧
Hydration
Drink 4 litres of water daily at altitude. Dehydration is the most common trigger for AMS — and the most easily preventable. Avoid alcohol entirely. Carry an insulated bottle as water freezes in regular bottles at altitude.
💊
Medication — Diamox
Consult your doctor about Diamox (Acetazolamide) — a widely used AMS prophylactic. Begin 24 hours before reaching 10,000 feet (3,050m). Use only with a doctor's prescription and guidance. Also carry ORS sachets, anti-nausea (Ondansetron), and Ibuprofen.
⚠️
The Golden Rule
Persistent headache or nausea? Do not go higher. Descent is the only cure. Severe AMS — confusion, inability to walk straight, coughing frothy sputum — is a medical emergency. Inform your TTT tour manager immediately.

Visa, Permits & Digital Connectivity
Documents, Permits & What Works in Tibet
Getting into Tibet requires three separate permits beyond your passport — and your digital life inside Tibet will be very different from home.
Chinese Group Visa
Applied by Tour Operator
Indian passport holders cannot apply individually. Must be obtained through a registered operator like Trip To Temples. Processing: 15–20 working days.
Tibet Travel Permit (TTP)
20–30 Days Processing
Required even if you hold a valid Chinese visa. Early registration is vital. Issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau and handled by TTT on your behalf.
Alien Travel Permit
Ngari Region Specific
Third permit for the Kailash (Ngari) region specifically. Processed inside Tibet by your Tibetan guide. Handled by TTT throughout.
📵
Digital Connectivity Warning — Prepare Before You Leave India
WhatsApp, Google, and Facebook are blocked inside China (including Tibet). Before leaving India: download WeChat for communication inside Tibet, and set up a VPN if you need access to blocked services. Indian SIM cards do not work in Nepal or Tibet — use hotel WiFi in Kathmandu and Nepalgunj for final family communications before entering Tibet.
✦ ॐ नमः शिवाय ✦
Money & Logistics
Cash, Currency & On-Ground Costs
UPI and Indian credit/debit cards do not work in Nepal or Tibet. Plan your cash carefully before departure.
💴
Currency in Tibet
Chinese Yuan (RMB / CNY) is the only currency accepted inside Tibet. Exchange your INR to RMB in Kathmandu (best rates) or Nepalgunj before crossing into Tibet. Recommended: exchange INR 6,000–10,000 worth of Yuan for personal expenses. Do not count on ATMs inside Tibet.
🐴
Porters & Ponies on Parikrama
Horses and porters are available at Darchen for the Kailash Parikrama. Approximate cost: RMB 1,000 – 2,500 for the 3-day trek, paid in cash (RMB) on-site at Darchen. Horses are not available for the descent from Dolma La on Day 2 — that section must be walked. Availability is not guaranteed — arrange early on arrival at Darchen.
🌱
The Sustainable Pilgrim
Trip To Temples advocates for a Zero-Waste Yatra. Carry a small waste bag and bring out everything you bring in. Use a reusable steel bottle with water purification tablets rather than single-use plastic. Respect the silence and the environment of the Tibetan Plateau — it is one of the last great wildernesses on Earth. Our 2,500+ pilgrims have collectively committed to leaving Kailash cleaner than they found it.
ॐ नमः शिवाय
A pilgrimage to Mount Kailash is more than just a trek across the high plateau — it is a return to the spiritual source. In the 2026 Year of the Horse, the cosmos offers a rare window where every step carries thirteen times the merit. Your odyssey to the centre of the universe begins with a single, intentional step.
